2017 Oscars Recap

Hollywood’s biggest night took place this past Sunday. This year’s Academy Awards definitely had a number of highlighted moments, whether good or bad, that will keep viewers talking for quite some time.

The 89th Academy Awards show was hosted by late night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel started off the show with an opening monologue that took digs at President Trump, displayed his ‘feud’ with Matt Damon, and jokingly made jabs at Meryl Streep. He also made sure to keep things interesting throughout the show by air dropping snacks to the audience to keep them satisfied, and even played a practical joke on some tourists who found themselves in front of an audience full of celebrities in the middle of the show.

What may be the most talked about moment of the night, however, is the ‘Best Picture’ mix-up at the end of the show. When Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway took the stage to present the winner for the ‘Best Picture’ category, they opened the red envelope to find a card that said Emma Stone’s name on it, therefore, announcing ‘La La Land’ to be the winners. Only to find out moments later, that they had the wrong card and ‘Moonlight’ was the real winner. Following the show, PricewaterhouseCoopers released a statement:

"We sincerely apologize to "Moonlight," "La La Land," Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.

We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.

It could be easily said that this moment will forever go down in Oscars history.
